TEACHING METHOD Bharati's approach to teaching involves helping her students develop a solid, healthy vocal technique, which includes proper breathing and support. This technique stems from the Italian “bel canto” school of singing. Although this method has a classical base, it can be applied to a variety of musical styles including musical theater, pop, rock, and jazz. Besides learning how to sing, students will learn how to read music and explore basic music theory - an essential element for becoming a good musician! BIOGRAPHY Bharati Soman, soprano, lives in Falls Church, VA where she maintains a private voice studio and teaches after-school voice lessons at Fairfax High School. Bharati was on the voice faculty at UC Davis for three years, and taught privately in the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Areas. Her students have been accepted to college voice programs including San Francisco Conservatory, Elon College and Shenandoah University. In addition to teaching, Bharati is an active performer. Credits include lead roles with Sacramento Opera, Pocket Opera, Cinnabar Theatre, Davis Comic Opera, & Capitol Opera Sacramento. Bharati has also performed concert works with the Golden Gate Philharmonic, Kensington Symphony Orchestra, UC Davis Symphony, Choralis and given recitals for Oakland Lyric Opera. Locally, Bharati is one of the 7 Sopranos and performs with various other groups in the DC Metro Area. Bharati is a past winner of the San Francisco Sinfonietta Messiah Competition and the East Bay Opera League Young Artists Scholarship Awards Competition. She has also been a finalist in Orlando Opera's Rehfuss Singing Actor Competition and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Awards, Pacific Region, and has placed in Eugene Opera’s Belle Voci National Competition and Maryland Opera Society’s Marie E. Crump Vocal Arts Competition. Bharati holds a Bachelor of Music from James Madison University, and a Master of Music and Performer Diploma from Indiana University.
